CHAPTER 11

Moscow, Russia; 1965

"We've suspected this for quite some time," General Zakharov admitted to Yulian behind closed doors. It struck Agent Komarov as odd that his superior wasn't calling a full meeting of all high-ranking officers and their agents, but Yulian was not one to question the choices of KGB upper echelon. The USSR did not tolerate questioning of orders very well; Yulian knew better than to make waves.

"For how long have you suspected?" Yulian asked, because that much was allowed, was expected. It was never said, but everyone knew that General Zakharov wanted more, wanted the retirement job, wanted Yulian Komarov as his successor; the little boy from low means who wouldn't be here without a chance testing at a rural farming village.

"Three months now. Dr. Tamm is not Russian, you know this." Zakharov gestured at him. Yulian nodded for him to continue. "We have suspected for some time that he wanted more than to be here with us. I had hoped that your influence would push him to stay, but I believe he has had other designs from the beginning."

Yulian squinted, but stayed silent.

General Zakharov stared back, expression stony. "You want to know why I didn't do something sooner."

"The thought crossed my mind, but it is not my place, sir." Yulian shrugged, his hands carefully folded in his lap, the picture of strict obedience.

General Zakharov cleared his throat. "I reported my suspicions to the head of Section 6, but they laughed me off, said I was getting paranoid in my old age. Without full support, I can't increase security, can't pull the men from elsewhere. And they were right, I didn't have the evidence. But now..." he trailed off and started going through a desk drawer that clearly had a secret compartment. He closed it and came away with a small metal key. "Now we have a mess on our hands."

"What do you propose happened, sir? What do you propose we do?"

"I propose," General Zakharov began as he rose to his feet, indicating for Yulian to follow, "that you do everything in your power to get Dr. Tamm and the rest of them back. We can't have this getting out. If our suspicions are right, there could be a leak in the KGB." He quickly glanced at Yulian, only to look back at the key in his hand.

Yulian swallowed hard. A leak was unimaginable. A leak was a threat the USSR had never faced before, and he had doubted they ever would. His doubts fled the moment he discovered the empty halls of Section 6.

"Your mission is to locate Section 6. If you find they're wearing KGB uniforms, enter as you would any other day and ask to speak to Dr. Tamm and head of security. What I believe happened is that our mole has convinced the whole of them that the base was compromised."

Yulian nodded. If Section 6 were compromised, their level in the top-secret priority chain would trigger an automatic Code Black: total relocation of all units, systems, and faculty to await processing by Section 2.
